RTH 120 - Fundamental Theory for Respiratory Care (2 CR.)
Course Description
Presents theory of basic patient assessment and functional medical terminology. Lecture 2 hours.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to introduce basic patient assessment skills and to provide an overview of the profession of Respiratory Therapy. It is offered as a prerequisite for application to the Respiratory Therapy Program.

None.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Define respiratory therapy and describe the roles, responsibilities, and functions of respiratory therapists within the healthcare system
- Explain the admission requirements, application process, and program expectations for entry into the respiratory therapy program
- Describe the purposes, functions, and activities of professional respiratory care organizations
- Define accreditation, credentialing, certification, licensure, and explain the need for continuing education
- Explain the fundamental aspects of basic cardiopulmonary assessment, including relevant medical terminology, commonly used assessment tools, infection control procedures, communication, and assessment techniques
