Revised 08/2022
RAD 240 - Radiographic Pathology (3 CR.)
Course Description
Presents a survey of common medical and surgical disorders that affect radiographic image. Discusses conditions related to different systems of the human body. Studies the correlation of these conditions with radiographs. Lecture 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide the radiographer with a basic understanding of nature of pathology and how that pathology manifests itself on radiographic images. It prepares the radiographer to recognize potential abnormalities on a radiograph and to bring those images to the attention of the radiologist before the patient leaves the imaging department.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Successful completion of all prior RAD courses with a grade of "C" or better.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and define medical terminology related to pathology.
- Discuss the manifestations of various pathologic conditions and their relevance to performing radiologic procedures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the healing process and the complications associated with the repair and replacement of tissue.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the various types of trauma/physical injuries.
- Discuss the rationale for determining appropriate patient care for patients suffering from physical injuries or pathologic conditions.
- Discuss the rationale for adjustment of patient positioning and technical factors appropriate to the patient’s injury or given pathological condition to optimally demonstrate the area of interest.
- Differentiate between normal and abnormal radiographic examinations by identifying gross abnormalities on the images.
- Identify the general radiographic approach to common radiographic examinations including key landmarks, common radiographic signs, and recognition of both common and dangerous conditions.
