RAD 131 - Elementary Clinical Procedures I (3 CR.)

Course Description

Develops advanced technical skills in fundamental radiographic procedures. Focuses on manipulation of equipment, patient care, osseous studies, skull procedures, and contrast studies. Provides clinical experience in cooperating health agencies. Part I of II. Clinical 15 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to orient and provide the student with the necessary exposure to the actual practice of radiography. It is the first in a series of five clinical education courses that will take place in the hospital clinical setting. The student will learn and practice basic radiographic examinations under the direct supervision of a registered technologist.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Successful completion of all prior RAD courses with a grade of “C” or better.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

• Understand and be familiar with the clinical guidelines of the Radiography Program,
• Understand and be familiar with departmental rules, regulations, and organizational structure of assigned Radiology department,
• Understand and practice basic professional conduct,
• Familiarity with the x-ray control panel for the operation of the x-ray equipment,
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of radiographic positioning and equipment manipulation,
• Utilize basic patient-care procedures and radiation protection,
• Begin to learn the methods of evaluating a radiograph through formalized image analysis,
• Master the Clinical Preliminary Performance Objectives according to required checklist.
