PHT 206 - Large Format Photography (3 CR.)
Course Description
Discusses 4x5 view camera technique and controls, and sheet film processing. Demonstrates the image- making advantages of large format photography. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week
General Course Purpose
Provides students with knowledge of the mechanics of view camera operation. The course will also explore the unique aesthetic of view camera photography by examining the traditional as well as contemporary masters working with the large format (view) camera.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites: PHT 103, or permission.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Operate a view camera
- Control perspective and depth of field
- Calculate exposure and development to control tonal range
- Process and print sheet film
- Scan large format film
Major Topics to Be Included
- 4x5 view camera operation
- Tilts, shift, and swings
- Methods of tonal control such as push/pull and the zone system, and reciprocity failure
- 4x5 sheet film processing and darkroom printing techniques
- Digital imaging techniques as they apply to view camera photography
