MUS 227 - Editing and Mixdown Techniques (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces the theories and practice of digital editing and mixdown techniques. Provides the skills necessary to edit, mixdown, externally reprocess, and otherwise manipulate multi-track original recordings into finished master recordings. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed to give the student the knowledge and skills necessary to produce a finished product from rough, multi-track, digital studio recordings by using editing, remixing, and external reprocessing techniques with live audio and/or samples. Through theoretical study, experimentation with a variety of editing and reprocessing techniques, directed lab activities, and the production of various finished materials, the student will acquire basic editing, post-production, and mixdown skills. 

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Enrollment in the Recording Technology Certificate program and completion of all 100 level recording technology certificate courses.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and skills in editing techniques of digital recording
  • consistently produce undetectable edits
  • demonstrate the use of effects generation, dynamic range processors, and equalization
  • effectively produce digital master recordings
  • consistently produced broadcast quality audio for varying media such AM radio, FM radio, television, and multi-media computer applications
  • effectively use a digital audio workstation [DAW]
    • understand the function of all persons involved in post-production

  • Digital audio workstation use and techniques
  • Use of reprocessing devices such as effects generators, dynamic range processors, equalization, etc.
  • Master production for digital, analog, CD, broadcast, and multi-media presentation
  • All Protools windows and parameters
  • Keyboard short cuts in Protools and Macintosh
  • Dithering and the final mix
  • Routing, gain staging and mixdown
