Course Description
Provides instruction in installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of Windows XP Professional as a desktop operating system in a networked data communications environment. Lecture 3 hours per week. Recommended Co-requisites or Pre-requisites ITN 101

Course Objectives
- Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: Install Windows XP Professional and upgrade to Windows XP Professional. Automate an installation of Windows XP Professional by using answer files and Uniqueness Database Files (UDFs), or by using the Microsoft Windows 2000 System Preparation Tool. Configure and manage hardware on a computer running Windows XP Professional. Manage disks. Configure and manage file systems. Troubleshoot the boot process and other system issues. Configure the desktop environment, and use profiles to control desktop customization. Configure and support Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Configure Windows XP Professional to operate on Windows networks. Support remote users. Configure Windows XP Professional for mobile computing. Monitor resources and performance. Course Content Planning, installing, and upgrading Microsoft Windows XP Professional from a CD or over a network. Troubleshooting failed installations. Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware devices and drivers. Working with disks and disk management (basic disks, dynamic disks, defragmentation). File systems, data compression and securing data using Encrypting File System (EFS). Examining the Windows XP Professional boot process. Customizing the Desktop environment, configuring system settings. User Profiles and Group Policies. Configuring TCP/IP services at the client and troubleshooting IP addresses. Creating and authenticating local user accounts. Configuring local security and logon options in a workgroup. Joining a domain. Connecting to Virtual Private Networks. Making files, folders, and Web pages available for offline use. Using Task Manager to monitor system performance. User Performance and Maintenance tools to improve performance. Monitoring Event Logs. Student Learning Outcomes Student must demonstrate the following skills: Install and appropriately configure Windows XP Professional Describe how answer files and UDFs are used to automate XP installs. Adding and removing devices by using the Hardware Wizard. Describe disk management and tools in XP. Defragment a disk in XP. Configure disk compression. Secure a file or folder using EFS. Given a scenario, be able to successfully troubleshoot boot problems in Windows XP. Explain how user profiles and Group Policy affect desktop customization. Configure an IP address and DNS client for Windows XP Professional. Configure a local user account to operate in a domain. Configure a VPN connection. Configure offline files. Demonstrate an understanding of how to use Task manager and Event viewer to monitor and interpret system and performance information on computers running Windows XP Professional.
