INT 236 - Interpreting in Special Situations (3 CR.)

Course Description

Studies roles, responsibilities, and qualifications involved in interpreting in specific settings, such as medical, legal, conference, religious, and performing arts. Addresses specific linguistic and ethical concerns for each.. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This is a beginning level elective course, for either prospective students interested in learning more about community interpreting as a profession or current interpreting students who are trying to decide the setting in which they would like to pursue employment. Course Prerequisites/Co-requisites ASL 102 and INT 130.

Course Objectives

  • List the factors demonstrating the necessity for community interpreters to be fluent in their first and second language.
  • List the various settings in which community interpreters practice.
  • Describe various language modes used by consumers of community interpreting services.
  • Identify and discuss legislation relevant to community interpreting.
  • Explain the role and function of interpreters in the community.
  • Apply decision-making techniques within the framework of the RID Code of Professional Conduct to community interpreting situations.
