IDS 235 - Antiques (3 CR.)

Course Description

Involves process of research, authentication, and determining provenance. Covers examples of furnishings, fixtures, textiles, glass, and ceramics. May require field trips, lectures, examination, and discussion to assist in determining age, condition, and other properties. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

The course is designed to introduce the student to the research, authentication, and development of the provenance of historic objects. Lectures will cover individual topics including ceramics, glass, textiles, and silver. Because furniture is covered in depth through the IDS 109 Styles of Furniture class, very little emphasis will be placed on furniture in this class, other than as a framework for the development of other objects. 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Examine objects and evaluate them based on observation
  • Explain the development of style in American and European decorative arts
  • Explain construction and fabrication techniques of antique and vintage objects
  • Prepare an object report on an historic object
