IDS 215 - Theory and Research in Commercial Design (3 CR.)

Course Description

Teaches graphic standards and specifications in interior design. Explains best practices of accessibility and code compliance for commercial applications. Focuses on program analysis and effective space planning. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course familiarizes students with the research and implementation of a variety of building code requirements in commercial design plans. Students will practice analyzing that data and practice planning spaces to satisfy those requirements.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: IDS 245.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Define the Programming process as related to space planning.
  • Research applicable code requirements for an ADA compliant space.
  • Successfully analyze programmatic data to inform interior design decisions.
  • Complete a Criteria Matrix that identifies key adjacencies and special considerations in a commercial design project.
  • Create a successful space plan using programmatic data.
  • Complete a commercial design project that meets the needs of a specific client.
