IDS 130 - Introduction to Kitchen and Bath Design Systems (3 CR.)
Course Description
Introduces quality kitchen and bath design elements in accordance with recognized industry standards. Presents basic components of kitchen and bath design, including assessment of existing conditions and construction systems, measurement, product selection, specification, and communication of the design. Teaches coordination of kitchen and bath design with existing structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and ventilation systems. 3 lecture hours. 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to introduce components of kitchen and bath design, including assessment of existing conditions and construction systems, measurement, product selection, specification, and communication of the design. The course is designed to teach students how to coordinate kitchen and bath design with existing structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and ventilation systems.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites: IDS 100 and IDS 105.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- define the elements and principles of interior design as they relate to kitchens and bath projects
- apply fundamentals of good design to a kitchen and bath design project
- interpret and apply relevant resources such as NKBA Planning Guidelines
- analyze and use typical architectural terms and symbols as used in kitchen and bath construction documents
- recognize standard building components used in basic kitchen/bath construction
- specify appropriate construction materials for various kitchen and bath applications
- explain the components required for a comprehensive set of kitchen and bath drawings
- create a basic kitchen and bath design plan and present design to a prospective client
