HMS 252 - Substance Use Treatment II (3 CR.)
Course Description
Expands knowledge and skill in working with individuals with substance use disorder. Focuses on assisting people with substance use disorder in individual and group settings and explores client treatment modalities. May provide opportunities for field experience in treatment centers. Lecture 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
The course is designed for students interested in becoming professionals in the various fields of human services that address substance use disorders across diverse populations.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: HMS 251.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, students should:
- Develop a comprehensive treatment plan for case management services for an individual with a substance abuse disorder
- Recognize the value of an interdisciplinary approach to addiction treatment
- Describe the importance of family, social networks, and community systems in the treatment and recovery process
- Identify the key functions/activities of a case manager in a substance abuse treatment program
- Describe group treatment continuum of care
- Examine impact of substance use on family, groups, and community systems
- Apply and demonstrate models of treatment and best practices to working with families, groups, and communities impacted by substance use disorders
- Explore relapse prevention strategies
- Apply cultural humility, equity, and responsiveness when working with diverse populations
