EMS 112 - Emergency Medical Technician - Basic I (4 CR.)

Course Description

Prepares student for certification as a Virginia and National Registry EMT. Includes all aspects of pre-hospital basic life support as defined by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services curriculum for Emergency Medical Technician Basic. Lecture 3 hours per week. Laboratory 2 hours per week. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Prepares the EMS student for national and/or state certification commensurate with the requirements of the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services curriculum for EMT-Basic. This program is a one (1) semester, 128 hour course that provides education in the provision of emergency medical care for persons who desire to function as an attendant in an ambulance or other setting where emergency care of sick or injured persons is required. The course exceeds current national Standard Curriculum of the US Department of Transportation- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidelines for the Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT-B). The course provides education in seven (7) modules: Preparatory, Airway, Patient Assessment, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, Infants and Children, and Operations. Upon successful completion of the Program, the student will be eligible for certification examination as an Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT-B) though the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services and/or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: EMS 100. Corequisite is EMS 120.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Lift and move patients safely
  • Gain and maintain an airway
  • Provide comprehensive assessments of patients
  • Provide basic pre-hospital care for patients with various illnesses and injuries
  • Describe the role of the EMT within the overall EMS system

  • Preparatory: Intro to EMS, Well-being of the EMT-B, Medical/Legal Issues, The Human Body, Baseline
  • Vital Signs and SAMPLE, and Lifting and Moving Patients
  • Airway: Gaining and maintaining an airway in a patient, provide ventilatory support for a patient
  • Patient Assessment: Provide a comprehensive assessment for a patient of and illness and/or injury
  • Medical Emergencies: Provide care for patients with various illnesses
  • Trauma Emergencies: Provide care for patients with various injuries
  • Infants and Children: provide care for various illnesses and injuries for pediatric patients
  • Ambulance Operations: Integrating the EMT-B into the overall EMS system. Incident Command System
