DMS 245 - Vascular Ultrasound Sectional Anatomy (3 CR.)

Course Description

Presents ultrasound sectional anatomy of the peripheral vascular, cerebrovascular and abdominal vascular systems. Anatomy will be presented in the transverse, sagittal and coronal planes. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce the sonography student to the normal sectional anatomy of the peripheral vascular, cerebrovascular and abdominal vascular systems. This course will serve as a foundation course for the other echocardiography courses. 

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

The student must satisfactorily complete all previous sonography courses with a grade of "C" or better.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of normal vascular anatomy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of normal vascular physiology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of clinical vascular diagnostic procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the relationship of vascular diagnostic techniques to patient history and physical examination.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate indications for non-invasive vascular examination.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of differential diagnosis as it relates to non-invasive vascular testing and examination.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic vascular procedures emphasizing indications, utility, and limitations of these procedures.
  • Discuss the importance and impact of laboratory values and modalities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of quantitation principles applied to non-invasive vascular testing.
  • Knowledge of normal vascular flow patterns and wave form morphology.
