ART 237 - Ceramics - Glaze Formulation and Firing (3 CR.)

Course Description

Explores glaze formulation, surface treatments, kilns and firing methods for designing and producing studio ceramics. Lecture 1 hour. Studio instruction 4 hours. Total 5 hours per week. 3 credits.

General Course Purpose

The purpose of the ceramic course is to study the various techniques utilized in studio ceramics, to make the student aware of relationships between the artist potter and ceramic industry. Emphasis will be on craftsmanship and creativity with special attention given to total concept from idea to finished product. This is a studio option under the AFA in Visual Arts.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: ART 153 or ART 154.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

Communication/Critical Thinking

  • Use media-specific terminology to explain the process of glaze calculation and firing techniques.
  • Demonstrate ability to alter basic glaze
  • Describe the firing

Technique

  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of safety protocols when using glaze materials and
  • Demonstrate ability to bisque and glaze fire

Glaze Calculation

  • Investigate the composition and formulation of a variety of ceramic decorative materials including:
  • Ceramic Slips/Engobes
  • Underglaze
  • Over Glaze
  • Oxide Wash Kiln Firing
  • Gain an understanding of kilns and firing processes, including kiln types, temperatures and atmospheres.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading

Materials

  • Gain an understanding of how clay bodies and glazes differ when combined or are fired to varying temperatures.

Critique

  • Utilize media-specific terminology to evaluate surface
