Welcome to NOVA's Accommodations and Accessibility Services

NOVA is committed to ensuring all students have an opportunity to pursue a college education regardless of the presence or absence of a disability. NOVA makes reasonable accommodations in providing course, program, and building modification, and/or auxiliary aids and services in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008. No academically qualified student with a disability will be denied access to or participation in the services, programs, and activities of the College.

What is College Steps?

The mission of College Steps is to provide support to students who are cognitively and academically qualified to attend college, but may lack the social and communication skills that are necessary for their higher education experience.

College Steps helps students prepare for meaningful careers and autonomy after college. College Steps is a NOVA-hosted, fee-based program that provides specialized resources and supports for NOVA students with social, communication, or learning disabilities. In most cases, community-based resources cover the cost of College Steps.

Substitutions that are based on a disability require additional documentation and must be approved by a special college committee. More information on the policy and how to request a substitution can be found on NOVA’s website at Course Substitution for Students with Disabilities.

Students wishing to use accommodations for the Virginia Placement Test or in a NOVA course must request them through Accommodations and Accessibility Services whether or not they currently have an IEP or 504 Plan. This applies to all students, including those taking dual enrollment courses in their high school, on a NOVA campus, or via NOVA Online.

Students using accommodations in dual enrollment courses must provide their instructors with a Memorandum of Accommodation (MOA) which will be issued by Accommodations and Accessibility Services.

Students should be aware that not all accommodations mentioned on an IEP or 504 Plan may be appropriate for college. Students choosing to use accommodations without first having them approved by Accommodations and Accessibility Services may risk not being able to earn college credit.

To request accommodations please watch the instructional video. To submit the online application, please click the following link: Application.

NOTE: All email correspondence from Accommodations and Accessibility Services will be sent to students’ NOVA Email Addresses. Students will need to check their email accounts for additional information and instructions.

Make sure your disability documentation is complete and up to date. Check the Documentation Guidelines for more information.

Become familiar with your campus surroundings in advance and know where to go and what to do during an emergency. Review the Emergency Preparedness Guidelines
