The General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) combines paid dealership employment with college coursework to prepare students for rewarding careers as General Motors service technicians. Students alternate between classroom instruction at NOVA and hands-on training at a sponsoring General Motors dealership, allowing them to earn income while gaining valuable real-world experience.
Designed through a partnership between Northern Virginia Community College and General Motors, GM ASEP develops technical expertise, professional skills, and manufacturer-specific knowledge that prepares students for successful careers in today's automotive industry. Students graduate with an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Automotive Technology while completing approximately 80% of the General Motors training required to become a GM Certified Technician.

How to Get Started
Anyone interested in GM ASEP should review and complete the following steps to apply for the program. Admission into the program requires acceptance to NOVA and sponsorship from a participating General Motors dealership. Students who do not obtain sponsorship before the program begins will not be able to continue in GM ASEP until sponsorship is secured.
- Apply for admission to NOVA. It's a simple, free, no-obligation online application.
- Submit the ASEP Application Form.
- Schedule an advising appointment with the GM ASEP Program Head.
- Submit a copy of your driving record as part of your application.
- Interview with participating GM dealerships.
- Obtain sponsorship from an approved General Motors dealership.

Sponsorship
After you are officially accepted into the program, you will begin the process of obtaining a sponsoring General Motors dealership. Sponsorship is a paid apprenticeship that allows you to gain valuable dealership experience while completing your degree and technical training. It is your responsibility to obtain a sponsor, but we will assist you with resume preparation, interview coaching, and connecting you with participating GM dealerships.
Educational Pathway
Students complete the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Automotive Technology while participating in paid dealership employment and receiving General Motors manufacturer-specific technical training. This combination of classroom instruction and real-world experience provides a direct pathway to advanced GM certifications, ASE certifications, and long-term career advancement within the automotive industry.
