Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Continues Partnership with the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education to Support Hunger Relief Initiatives for NOVA Students

Thanks to the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation’s continued partnership with the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE), the NOVA Foundation received a grant to expand hunger relief initiatives and promote food security among students on all six of Northern Virginia Community College’s (NOVA) campuses.

Today, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce released their first annual Northern Virginia Workforce Index. The index combines survey responses from 91 local business leaders with real-time labor market data to provide detailed analysis on employer sentiment and workforce practices in the Northern Virginia region. Coming at a critical point of inflection in the national and regional economy, the Workforce Index indicates that most employers (72%) are optimistic about near-term economic and business prospects, but many businesses are now facing meaningful challenges finding and hiring talent due to labor shortages.

Northern Virginia Community College Receives $466,000 from U.S. Dept. of Education to Create Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is pleased to announce that the Department of Education has awarded it a grant totaling $466,000 for the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success (CEVSS). Roughly 15% of NOVA students are current or former military members or dependents, and this new center will provide a holistic, single point-of-contact for them. It will house a multitude of educational services for members of the military, veterans and their dependents related to transitioning out of the military, enrolling at NOVA, and completing their certification or degree. With these funds, NOVA will support a projected 4,500 student-veterans over three years.

Northern Virginia Community College Introduces IT Apprenticeship Program with AT&T To Help It Grow National Security Sector Tech Talent

Starting next week, Northern Virginia Community College will begin accepting applications for a new information technology (IT) apprenticeship program created with AT&T and the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI). The program offers NOVA students IT training and on-the-job experience with AT&T and seeks to create a larger pool of talent to meet the needs of federal customers in the National Security sector.

NOVA Awarded $100,000 From the Metallica Scholars Initiative to Serve Students in Nursing Program

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) was selected from a competitive, national field of community colleges to receive $100,000 to transform the future of students in the region. Funded by Metallica’s All Within My Hands (AWMH) Foundation and led by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the Metallica Scholars Initiative was designed to directly support students while also elevating the importance of career and technical education.

NOVA’s Go Virginia Grant to Support Dual Enrollment Expansion for Information and Engineering Technology

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) was recently awarded a Go Virginia grant of $1.11 million following Governor Northam’s announcement that Virginia will allocate over $11 million to help advance economic recovery efforts across the Commonwealth. NOVA will apply the funds to implement the Dual Enrollment Expansion Program for Information and Engineering Technology (DEEP-IET) with a goal to develop regional workforce capacity in IET careers.

NOVA Educational Foundation Welcomes New Board Members

The NOVA Educational Foundation (NOVA Foundation) announced two new board members at its most recent board meeting. College Board Members Rosaelena O’Neil and Zuzana Steen will now join the Foundation Board as well. Both will fill the positions vacated by two-term board members Ellen Dyke and Tony Burchard. As NOVA Foundation board members, O’Neil and Steen will hold their positions for up to three years.

G3 Release Announcing Fall Scholarship

G3 Scholarships give students an opportunity in career/technical fields. Fall scholarships now open for eligible students at NOVA.

On the heels of Governor Northam’s 2021-2022 budget signing, G3 Scholarships at Northern Virginia Community College are now open and available to eligible students seeking certifications and degrees that will lead to an in-demand job.

Northern Virginia Community College has been selected to receive an IDEAS (Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students) grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Capacity Building Program for U.S. Study Abroad. NOVA is one of 26 colleges and universities from across the United States, selected from 132 applicants, to create, expand and/or diversify American student study overseas in support of U.S. foreign policy goals.

Governor Ralph Northam Signs “G3” Bill at NOVA

Get Skilled. Get a Job. Give Back Initiative to Make College Possible for Qualifying Students

Today, Governor Ralph Northam signed the “Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back” initiative, or “G3” program bill at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus. The “G3” program provides $36 million each year over the next two years to make program-targeted, tuition-free community college possible for qualifying students.

Today, Northern Virginia Community College joined nearly 40 institutions to launch the Taskforce on Higher Education and Opportunity. NOVA and Taskforce member partners are driven to act by the tremendous challenges caused by the pandemic, income inequality, the changing nature of work and levels of unemployment among recent college graduates that are nearly double those seen during the 2008 recession.

One-Hundred Participants Donate Shoes, Write Notes to First Responders to Honor MLK

Over 100 students, faculty, staff and community members gathered on the Martin Luther King Day of Service to volunteer, virtually. The event, which historically takes place at NOVA’s Alexandria Campus, was moved online as all events are currently virtual. The theme for the virtual day of service was, ‘Taking a Stand for Service: Three Ways to Take a Step Toward Service and Justice.’
