How the Virginia Career Switcher Program Works
Once you’re ready to begin, you’ll apply through the statewide career switcher program. To qualify, you need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and at least three years of full-time work experience. You’ll also complete a subject-area Praxis exam before submitting your application materials.
At NOVA, you’ll complete the one-semester Level I coursework in a flexible format that fits your schedule — with online content and in-person Saturday sessions at select campuses. After finishing Level I and securing a teaching job in Virginia, you’ll move into Level II: a one-year period of mentorship and support as you teach.
When you’ve met all requirements and earned a recommendation from your school division, you’ll be eligible to apply for a full 10-year renewable Virginia teaching license.
