Dear NOVA Nighthawks,
We know that just a few days ago you were focused on planning for commencement: the culmination of your NOVA experience and the recognition of all that you have accomplished at our college. Your family and friends were looking forward to joining you for this community celebration.
Now, in light of the impact of COVID-19 on all social gatherings, the world looks different, and we are very sorry to share that NOVA has joined all Virginia community colleges in canceling May commencements. We do not make this decision lightly, but your health and well-being are paramount. There is simply no way to have this community celebration and follow the most recent CDC guidance that calls for avoiding gatherings of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks.
All of us at NOVA are incredibly proud of your academic achievement! You have added so much to our Nighthawk community—in your classrooms and labs, in your fieldwork and internships, in your clubs and organizations, in the bold spirit you brought to our college. Your completion of this degree is worthy of great celebration. And, we know that a letter of congratulations, no matter how heartfelt, is not enough.
We are looking for another way to recognize your achievement and hope to have an alternative to share soon.
In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out with questions, take care during this unprecedented situation, and know that everyone at NOVA could not be more proud of you! You are why we’re Boldly NOVA!
