Transition to New Math Courses

NOVA will be implementing new math courses starting in Fall 2018 as part of the Virginia Community College System. The purpose is to improve your success and increase your transferability of courses to four-year institutions.

New Math Courses

These changes do not affect developmental math (BSK1 and MTT). However, a new bundled MTH 9 course will be offered in Spring 2019 for students who need to complete developmental math units 6 through 9.

Here are the new courses that NOVA will offer starting Fall 2018:

Important information:

  1. Important changes: All new math classes require a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course.
  2. Starting in Fall 2018, students should take the newly numbered courses. Due to the changes, students should determine which math is appropriate for their program of study. See an advisor for assistance.
  3. For students who plan on retaking a math course:
    • Many old courses will no longer be offered after Summer 2018. In Fall 2018, students taking a course for grade replacement can take the new course to have the previously earned grade replaced as follows:
Original CourseGrade May Be Replaced By
      MTH 163 MTH 161
      MTH 164 MTH 162
      MTH 166 MTH 167
      MTH 241 MTH 245
      MTH 242 MTH 246
      MTH 271 MTH 261
      MTH 272 MTH 262
      MTH 277 MTH 265
      MTH 285 MTH 266
      MTH 291 MTH 267
      MTH 292 MTH 289
    • Important note for Calculus I and II and Discrete Math:
      MTH 263 (4 credits) replaces MTH 173 (5 credits).
      MTH 264 (4 credits) replaces MTH 174 (5 credits).
MTH 288 (3 credits) replaces MTH 286 (4 credits). Due to the credit change, grades in MTH 173, MTH 174 and MTH 286 cannot be replaced by grades in MTH 263, MTH 264 and MTH 288, respectively. Therefore they will be offered one last time in Fall 2018. Students who plan on retaking MTH 173, MTH 174, or MTH 286 for grade replacement must do so in Fall 2018. These courses will be offered on a limited basis (they may not be offered at all campuses).
    • Similarly for Mathematics for Allied Health:
MTH 133 (3 credits) replaces MTH 126 (2 credits). Due to the credit change, grades in MTH 126 cannot be replaced by grades in MTH 133. Therefore MTH 126 will be offered one last time in Fall 2018. Students who plan on retaking MTH 126 for grade replacement must do so in Fall 2018. MTH 126 will be offered only on the Loudoun Campus.
    • The remaining old courses are being phased out and will no longer be offered after Fall 2018. If a student wants to retake the course for grade improvement, the last opportunity to do this will be in Fall 2018. These courses will be offered on a limited basis (they may not be offered at all campuses). After Fall 2018, The following courses will no longer be offered:
MTH 151 Math for the Liberal Arts I
MTH 152 Math for the Liberal Arts II
      MTH 157 Elementary Statistics
      MTH 181 Finite Mathematics I
      MTH 182 Finite Mathematics II
  4. The sequence of courses: Students may complete course sequences with combinations of old and new courses. Therefore, a student should not delay in taking a math course due to the changes. Students should see an advisor if they have questions. For students who have started their math sequence:
Sequences of Original Courses May Be Substituted With the Following Sequences
    MTH 151, MTH 152 MTH 151, MTH 154 OR MTH 152, MTH 154
    MTH 152, MTH 241 MTH 152, MTH 245
    MTH 163, MTH 164 MTH 163, MTH 162
    MTH 181, MTH 182 MTH 181, MTH 245
    MTH 241, MTH 242 MTH 241, MTH 246
    MTH 271, 272 MTH 271, MTH 262
    MTH 173, MTH 174, MTH 277 MTH 173, MTH 264, MTH 265 OR MTH 173, MTH 174, MTH 265
    MTH 291, 292 MTH 291, MTH 289
