Northern Virginia Community College Named One of the Top 2019-2020 Military Spouse Friendly® Schools

Annandale, Va. (June 10, 2019) – Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) has been named one of the top Military Spouse Friendly® Schools. Continuing its mission to provide veterans and military spouses with the finest choices for post-secondary education, VIQTORY released the 2019-2020 Military Spouse Friendly® Schools list. Since 2009, the Military Spouse Friendly® Schools list has been a reliable resource for military spouses and has set a standard for higher education institutions to provide the best post-secondary education experiences for spouses of service members.

This prestigious list is created using data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations to create a comprehensive guide for military spouses looking to further their education. This year 196 schools earned this prestigious designation.

“As a former military spouse, I fully understand the challenges and sacrifices our military spouses encounter,” said Dr. Frances Villagran-Glover, vice president of student services at NOVA. “NOVA is committed to supporting whole military families. Our military spouses are incredibly diverse and come to us with a wealth of experiences. They are a valuable part of our community of adult learners.”

The 2019-2020 Military Spouse Friendly® Schools list will be published in the September issue of Military Spouse magazine. The list is also posted on www.militaryfriendly.com.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings for the listing were established by VIQTORY with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

About Military Friendly® Schools

The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions.

The survey questions, methodology, criteria, and weighting were developed with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers. Ernst & Young, a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction, and advisory services, independently evaluated the scoring methodology used for the Military Friendly® Schools list using the criteria set forth by VIQTORY. The services performed by EY were limited to advisory procedures and do not provide assurance over the scoring methodology.

The survey is administered for free and is open to all post-secondary schools that wish to participate for consideration. Criteria for the designation can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.
