Getting Started!

Am I a New Student?

I am a new student if I have never completed an application at NOVA or any Community College in the state of Virginia.

If this is true, please complete the following steps:

1. Apply to become a NOVA Student:

  • Click here to go to the VCCS Admission page. Check the "I am not a robot" check box, and click on "New Users".
    • Personal Information: Enter your current, complete legal name that is on your drivers license, VISA Status or Permanent Green Card. Providing your social security number is highly recommended. Make sure your SS# is correct. If you choose not to enter your SS# or do not have one, this will affect your ability to apply for financial aid in the future.
    • Address Information: Enter the street number and name on the first line. If you have an apartment number, enter it on the second line. Use the drop down menu for state and country. Select the city or country of residence from the drop down menu.
    • Alien Permanent or Not indicated: Choose one based on your VISA. If you do not have this information please contact Student Services at 7803.323.3886 or email Eunice Torkornoo at etorkornoo@nvcc.edu.
    • Education History: Enter High School or any college information.
    • Educational Goals: Click on "Certificate" and be sure to click on "College Credit Courses".
    • In-State Tuition: This takes you to a domicile questionnaire which determines if you qualify for in-state or out-of-state tuition. You must complete this questionnaire to register for classes.
    • Submit application: Print out the application and write down your NOVA EMPLID #. You will need this number to register for classes.

2.  Set User Preferences: 

  • Click here to login to MyNOVA and click on "SIS Student Information System".
    • Click on Student Center
    • At the bottom left of the screen. Click on User Preferences.
    • Institution = Northern Virginia Community College
    • Academic Career = Credit
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon next to "Term" and select the current term (such as '2017 Spring')
    • You do not need to enter anything for "Aid Year".
    • Click "Save".
    • Sign out of SIS.

3. Take the English and Math Placement Tests



4. Fill out the Specialized Degree Programs Application Form:

  • Click here to access the form.
    • Use your MyNOVA credentials to gain access to the rest of the form.
    • Submit the form.
    • You will be contacted regarding the approval of your application.

5. If you applied for the Fridays-Only 2-year General Studies Degree Program: Remind your supervisor to fill out the Supervisor Application Form:

  • For more information, you or your supervisor can contact Joann Credle at jcredle@nvcc.edu.

Am I a Current Student?

I am a current student if I have previously completed an application at NOVA or any Community College in the state of Virginia, and have taken classes within the past three semesters.

If this is true, please complete the following steps:

1.  Set User Preferences: 

  • Click here to login to MyNOVA and click on "SIS Student Information System".
    • Click on Student Center
    • At the bottom left of the screen. Click on User Preferences.
    • Institution = Northern Virginia Community College
    • Academic Career = Credit
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon next to "Term" and select the current term (such as '2017 Spring')
    • You do not need to enter anything for "Aid Year".
    • Click "Save".
    • Sign out of SIS.

2. Fill out the Specialized Degree Programs Application Form:

  • Click here to access the form.
    • Use your MyNOVA credentials to gain access to the rest of the form.
    • Submit the form.
    • You will be contacted regarding the approval of your application.

3. If you applied for the Fridays-Only 2-year General Studies Degree Program: Remind your supervisor to fill out the Supervisor Application Form:

Am I a Returning Student?

I am a returning student if I have previously completed an application at NOVA or any Community College in the state of Virginia, but have not registered for classes in the last three semesters.

If this is true, please complete the following steps:

1. Re-Apply to become a NOVA Student

  • Click here to go to the VCCS Admission page. Check the "I am not a robot" check box, and click on "Returning Users".
    • Personal Information: Enter the same name that was used the first time you applied to the Virginia Community College System even if you have since married, divorced or changed your name. (You can make changes later). If you are not sure of the correct name to use. See instructions below*.
    • Address Information: Enter the same address that was used the first time you applied, even if you have moved house. (You can make changes later). If you are not sure of the correct address to use, see instructions below*.

Certificate Program Course Schedules

Business Management: Leadership Development Career Studies Certificate

Purpose: This program combines communication and human relations competencies with specialized business courses. It is designed for individuals who are currently, or hope to be, in leadership, human resource, or supervisory managerial positions in the private/not-for-profit sector or governmental organizations. The certificate is especially appropriate for individuals who have a degree related to their field of employment, but who lack training in team leadership or management skills. The program emphasizes practical application of leadership concepts and theories to prepare students for team leadership positions.

Cyber Security Career Studies Certificate

Purpose: This program is designed as an enhanced competency module to provide expertise in security to networking specialists. This curriculum will prepare networking specialists for employment as network security specialists or Internet security specialists.This program also helps prepare students for the Network+, Security+, and the CEH certification exams.
