Using NOVA's Schedule of Classes

1) Before You Start…

• Complete the Schedule Planning Worksheet before trying to enroll. Keep your worksheet for future reference or print out your schedule using NovaConnect.

• If you are selecting both a lecture and a lab in a course such as Biology, Chemistry or English, be sure to follow the instructions in the Schedule of Classes if matching lecture and lab sections are required.

• If you change your schedule, you are advised to drop classes before adding classes.

• Be sure none of the classes you select are held on the same day and time.

2) Course Prerequisites
Some of the classes shown in this Schedule indicate that a prerequisite or co-requisite is needed to take that particular class. These requirements, which are designed to help ensure your success in the course, can be found in NOVA’s Catalog. You may not enroll in a course for which you do not meet the prerequisites by the time the course begins. You may be dropped from any course for which you have not met the prerequisite.

3) Student Development (SDV) Courses
First-time college students are required to take SDV 100 or another SDV course before enrolling for their 16th semester hour at the College. But, to get the most out of your college education, you should take the SDV/College Success Skills course during your first semester at NOVA. These courses are designed to build your confidence and college skills, and help you develop your college and career plans.

4) Repeating a Class
Before registering for a class that you have previously taken, see NOVA’s Catalog or the College’s Web site at www.nvcc.edu for information on repeating a class.

5) Auditing a Class
If you wish to take a course but not receive a grade, you must enroll for it in the usual way and then change to audit. Your instructor and the division dean will need to approve this change by signing the form NVCC 125-12 Change from Credit to Audit. The Student Services Center must receive the signed form by the last day to withdraw without grade penalty or change to audit (see Important Dates). The course will be listed on your transcript with a grade of X.

6) Cooperative and Internship Education Opportunities
For specific information on the co-op process, visit the co-op program Web site at www.nvcc.edu/annandale/business/coop or NOVA’s Catalog for information.

7) Searching for Classes Online
You can speed up your search for a specific course by using NOVA’s convenient online course schedule. There you’ll find finger-tip access to hundreds of classes that will help you locate the classes you want — from career advancement to academic growth or personal enrichment. Most Summer classes are six or 12 weeks long, but NOVA offers many shorter schedules, while the distance learning program features multiple start dates and varying course lengths.

• You can search for the class you need by academic discipline, campus location and/or term.

• You can search for courses online by going to the Schedule Search at http://www.nvcc.edu/schedule/crs2073/. Select the search options for the classes you want, click “search” and scroll until you find the right course.

• You can also log onto NovaConnect and search for a course by course prefix and number, or by class number. To reveal the course information, you must click on the class section number link.

• HELPFUL HINT: Keep a printed copy of the following information on class symbols handy for reference.
