    The Importance of Attending Classes

    When you register for a class at NOVA, you are making a commitment to engage fully in the learning process by attending the class regularly or by participating in an online class.  Since the Commonwealth of Virginia contributes a significant portion of the cost of your education as a NOVA student, and since you are taking a seat in class that might have gone to another student, you must establish your attendance or participation early in the semester.

    Effective Spring 2008, if you do not attend at least one class meeting or participate in a distance learning class by the Last Day to Drop with a Tuition Refund (also known as the Census Date), your class registration will be administratively deleted
    This means:

    • there will be no record of the class or any letter grade on your transcript;
    • the course credits will be deducted from your course load;
    • a reduction in credits may affect your student status -- full-time or part-time;
    • you will not receive a tuition refund.

          ___________________________
    For Spring 2008, the Census Date for all classes in the 16-Week Session is January 31; for ELI's (Distance Learning) first session 16-week courses, the Census Date is February 1. (NOTE: ELI offers three sessions with different starting dates each semester.)  For all classes in the First 8-Week session, it is January 22.  And for all classes in the Second 8-Week Session, it is March 25.  For all other classes (“dynamic” session classes), the Census Date is individually set.  To find the Census Date for dynamic session classes, do the following:

    • Navigate to NOVA home page: www.nvcc.edu
    • Click on Class Schedule/Catalog on left;
    • Click on the schedule and term from menu;
    • Enter Subject, Campus or Center, Session (Dynamic);
    • Click Search;
    • Click on Class ID (5 digits) for details.

             The Census Date for that class (Drop with Refund) is printed on the bottom.
