The curriculum will prepare students to demonstrate the following skills; (1) demonstrate fundamental knowledge and comprehension of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and empirical findings to discuss how psychological principles apply to behavioral phenomena; (2) develop knowledge and skills in the methods of scientific inquiry and critical thinking; (3) demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to a psychologist’s ethical responsibility in work and society; (4) demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to a psychologist’s social responsibility to multicultural and global concerns; and (5) demonstrate written and/or oral communication skills on topics within the study of psychology.
Students are prepared to transfer to a college or university to major in Psychology. Specifically, students should demonstrate the following skills. Students will: (1) demonstrate fundamental knowledge and comprehension of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and empirical findings to discuss how psychological principles apply to behavioral phenomena; (2) develop knowledge and skills in the methods of scientific inquiry and critical thinking; (3) demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to a psychologist’s ethical responsibility in work and society; (4) demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to a psychologist’s social responsibility to multicultural and global concerns; and (5) demonstrate written and/or oral communication skills on topics within the study of psychology.

Northern Virginia Community College accepts industry-standard certifications, credentials and/or professional courses for credit. Broadly, licenses, credentials and/or certifications must be current and valid for consideration. In 2017, of the millions of people with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology as their highest degree, 24% were not in the workforce, 4% were unemployed and 72% were employed. The majority of those working were employed in management, professional services and sales and marketing. Forty-four percent of the people who earn a Bachelor’s degree go on to earn a Master’s degree in psychology or other field or a Doctoral degree. Of those who earn their Master’s degree most are counselors, psychologists or social workers. Of those who earn their Doctorate, most are psychologists, counselors or professors.
