About the Program

This program is for students who wish to set up their own studio or seek employment as music recording technicians. The curriculum includes recording history, recording techniques, studio design, studio electronics, recording and editing, music copyright law, and small business management. Graduates are employed as assistants and aides in recording studios, broadcast studios, myriad other recording enterprises, and countless private studios in the recording industry.

Program Details

The Music curriculum includes performance, theory, history, technology, improvisation, and composition. Students will learn practice techniques and utilize them in ensembles, public performances, and teaching. Students learn skills in the following: music theory, music history, composition, notation, improvisation, technology, piano, guitar, voice, sight-singing, ear training, woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, keyboard, band, orchestra, chorus, jazz ensemble, chamber ensembles, music appreciation, music criticism, aesthetics, analysis, performance, stage presence, music business, recording, mixing, and more.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    Northern Virginia Community College accepts industry-standard certifications, credentials and/or professional courses for credit. Broadly, licenses, credentials and/or certifications must be current and valid for consideration. For more information regarding the status of the certification and its eligibility for credit, please see an advisor or faculty members in the discipline area that awards CPL credit.

  • Career Prospects

    Some careers do not necessarily require additional education beyond the associate degree, such as music directors, composers, musicians, and singers.
