NURSING


Associate in Applied Science Degree

Purpose: The program in Nursing is designed to prepare students to participate as contributing members of the health team, rendering direct care to patients in a variety of health-care facilities and agencies. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students will be eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) leading to state licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and are qualified to assume registered nurse positions in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, physicians' offices, HMOs and other comparable health- care facilities.

Students must comply with all General Requirements for Health Technologies as specified in Section I.

Admission Requirements:

1. Attend a Nursing information session.

2. Meet prerequisites to become program placed.

a. Students must have a high school diploma or GED.

b. One unit of high school-level algebra and two units of science (1 unit of biology and 1 unit of chemistry) with a grade of "C" or better.

c. Qualify for ENG 111 and MTH 126 through acceptable scores on college placement tests.

3. Take the NLN Pre-Admission Examination and achieve scores at the 50th percentile in verbal abilities, mathematics, and science on the NLN Pre-Admission Examination. Remedial assistance is available through courses and/or the learning resource center for students who do not achieve acceptable scores. Students may retake the exam until the required scores are obtained.

4. Submit a completed mail portfolio to the Nursing office within the specified mail-in period. Portfolios postmarked before or after the mail-in period will not be accepted. Students will be accepted into the program in the order received based on the date of receipt of the completed portfolio. Students not accepted into the program must re-submit a complete portfolio for the following year.

Special Program Continuation Requirements:

1. Students must pass required NAS and MDL courses with a "C" grade or higher.

2. All of the following courses must be completed by the end of the first academic year: ENG 111, *MDL 108, PSY 201 and 202. Students will not be admitted to NUR 205 until those courses have been completed.

*Students who plan on seeking a BSN in Nursing should take NAS 161 and NAS 162 instead of NAS 150 and MDL 108.

Licensurer Requirements: The Virginia State Board of Nursing reserves the right to deny licensure to any candidate who has been convicted of a crime or any offense relating to the abuse of alcohol and/or use or sale of controlled substances in Virginia or any other state. Any applicant to the Nursing program who has been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony must consult with the program head prior to placement into the Nursing program.

Re-Admission: Students who leave the Nursing program and wish to be re-admitted must meet the requirements for initial admission into the program. Any developmental studies that were prescribed at the time the student left the program must have been satisfactorily completed. Students wishing to be re-admitted to the NVCC Nursing program may be required to satisfactorily complete NUR 116, Skill Competency Assessment, 1 credit.

Transfer and Advanced Placement: Nursing credits earned at other institutions are reviewed by the program head to determine if the courses in question apply to the curriculum and/or if substitutions may be made within the curriculum. Students who transfer to NVCC with prior nursing courses may be required to satisfactorily complete NUR 116, Skill Competency Assessment, 1 credit.

Advanced placement is available for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) wishing to enter the Nursing program with advanced standing. See the program head for details.

Program Accreditation: The Nursing program is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing.

Total minimum credits for the Nursing major (A.A.S. degree) = 69.

(1) The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 207, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.

(2) Students may choose SPD 110 Intro. to Speech Communication, SPD 126 Interpersonal Communication, or SPD 115 Small Group Discussion.
