PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN


Certificate

Purpose: The Patient Care Technician Certificate is designed to prepare multi-skilled health care practitioners to perform clinical functions in the pre-hospital environment including physicians' offices, urgent care facilities and nursing homes.

Admission Requirements:

1. Admission to NVCC.

2. 18 years of age or older or permission of the program head.

3. High school graduate or GED.

4. Completion of one unit or high school algebra and one unit of high school science with C or better grade or completion of college math and science course.

5. Scores on NVCC English and Math placement tests to qualify for ENG 111 and MTH 126. Students who do not receive satisfactory placement scores may take developmental courses to qualify. Developmental courses must be completed before students will be program placed.

6. Current CPR Certification.

7. Attendance at Patient Care Technician information session.

Total minimum credits for the Patient Care Technician certificate = 38.

(1) MDL 100 meets the first 8 weeks of the semester. MDL 190 meets the second eight weeks. Upon successful completion of these two courses, students will be eligible to apply for phlebotomy certification.

(2) Upon completion of NUR 190 students will be certified in First Aid and eligible to apply for Certified Nurse Assistant certification.

(3) Upon successful completion of RAD 195 students will be eligible to apply for licensure for limited radiography.

(4) Six weeks, 36 hours per week = 216 clinical hours of clinical patient care.
