HIT 226 - LEGAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH RECORD DOCUMENTATION (2 CRS.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Presents the legal requirements associated with health record documentation. Emphasizes the policies and procedures concerning the protection of the confidentiality of the patient's health record. Lecture 2 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The student will learn to evaluate the health record as a legal document with a special emphasis placed on the policies and procedures concerning the release of medical information.

HIT 100 with C or above

COURSE OBJECTIVES

    1. To acquire knowledge of the system, statistics and policies governing record retention.
    2. To develop an awareness of the importance of the health record as a legal document.
    3. To develop an awareness of the confidential nature of the health record.
    4. To develop skill in releasing confidential information to responsible parties.
