DNH 225 - COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION (2 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Exposes the student to the principles, practices, methods, and audiovisual materials used for group dental health instruction. Laboratory experience provides an opportunity for the student to assume responsibility for designing, implementing, and assessing community dental health rpograms. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

Orientation to the educational materials, devices and techniques for group dental health instruction. Techniques of group presentations are studied including educational methods and materials, communication skills and psychological approaches to modifying behavior as it relates to improving oral health.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Completion of DNH 220 - "Community Dental Health" and successful completion of four semesters of the dental hygiene program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course through reading assignments, lectures/seminars, group discussion and field experience, the student will be able to:

    1. define the term health
    2. discuss the significance of dental health to total health
    3. define health education and discuss important concepts and relevance of health and dental health education
    4. discuss and compare psychologies and learning concepts and their application to dental health instruction such as motivation, persuasion, interests and communication
    5. discuss the following factors when studying behavior such as: the elements of behavior, fear, abnormal or neurotic behavior
    6. list and describe important characteristics of age level for the student such as physical, social, emotional and cognitive characteristics from handouts and library references
    7. describe and discuss important aspects of learning as described in the text, outside reading, lectures and seminars
    8. discuss important aspects of strategies for teaching including:
    1. writing objectives
    2. writing lesson plans
    3. use of audio/visual aids while using important aspects of motivation in relation to cognitive theories and Maslow's hierarchy of needs
    4. evaluation techniques used to measure learning
    1. understand and describe current thinking about individual differences in relation to grouping of the student according to ability especially in the area of teaching the exceptional and handicapped student
    2. discuss important factors in maintaining control in the classroom, coping with frustrations encountered, and improving one's skill as a teacher
    3. teach important aspects of dental health to students in a local school and at a site visited such as a day care center for preschool children or senior citizens in nursing homes or day care centers
