COURSE DESCRIPTION
Focuses on soil in its relationship to engineering construction. Includes soil composition and structure, weight-volume relationships, sampling procedures, classification systems, water in soil, stresses, strains, bearing capacity, settlement and expansion, compaction, stabilization, and introduction to foundations and retaining walls. Lecture 2 hours per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
To familiarize the student with the properties of soils, the uses of soils in construction and the science of soils engineering.
ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES
Competency in algebra and trigonometry and an introductory knowledge of strength of materials. Prerequisite: MTH 116. Co-requisite: EGR 130.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, the student will have an understanding of soils and their use in construction including: properties and classification, compaction, use in foundations, control of quality, investigations, standard ASTM specifications.
