Food for Fines
From March 2-6, 2020, the Northern Virginia Community College Parking and NOVACard Services department will accept non-perishable food items as payment for parking citations. The items will be donated to the College’s Birdhouses (Food Pantries), which provides services to NOVA students.
Although The Birdhouses accept a large number of items, only the items below are eligible for the program. The following items will be accepted as part of the Program:
- Canned Beans/Soup – Pull Tab Only (12oz minimum)
- Cereal – Box or Bag (12oz minimum)
- Mac & Cheese – Microwaveable Easy Mac (4 pack minimum)
- Cup Noodles (6 pack minimum)
- Peanut Butter – Other Nut Butters Accepted (16oz minimum)
- Oatmeal – Box or Canister (12oz minimum)
- Granola Bars (12 pack minimum)
- Pasta/Rice – Box or Bag (1lb or 16oz minimum)
- Bottled Water (24 pack minimum)
Each individual item counts as one, even if the item is larger (ex: if a 32oz Peanut Butter is provided, that is one item).
Expired items, glass containers, and open containers will not be accepted.
Only citations with a base amount of $25 and $75 are eligible for the program. Five (5) items need to be donated for a $25 citation and ten (10) items need to be donated for a $75 citation. Only one citation may be forgiven per donation week, with a maximum of three (3) citations per academic year (if the promotion is run multiple times throughout the year). All late fees and appeal fees will be waived with the base amount.
Any fines that have been transferred to collections are not eligible for the program.
No refunds will be issued for citations that have already been paid.
The items need to be dropped off at a Campus Parking Office. The staff will provide a form that needs to be completed at the time of donation. Once the form and items are accepted by the office, the fine amount will be ‘paid’ within two (2) business days. Any holds associated with the citation will be removed after the citation is ‘paid’.
