By Living Modestly and Giving Back Most of His Income, Northern Virginia Community College Mathematics Professor Donates $1 Million to Help the Students He Teaches

Dr. Richard Semmler fulfills his commitment by giving his employer of 45 years $1 million before his retirement.

Dr. Semmler has made a profound impact during his long career teaching mathematics at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). He has lived modestly, with no frills - no phone, no internet, no vacations, no new car while living in a small apartment and working several part-time jobs in addition to his full-time teaching position, because he would rather use his income to help change the lives of his students.

Military Appreciation, Career and Resource Fair at NOVA

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) welcomes the local veteran community to Military Appreciation, Career and Resource Fair on November 6, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Woodbridge Campus. The event will honor active duty and veteran service members and their families and connect them with valuable career and support resources.

NOVA Students and Community Invited to Participate in National Writing Day

The November 2 event will celebrate and explore the importance of writing and communication.

Northern Virginia Community College is launching National Writing Day on November 2, 2018, at the Annandale Campus. The inaugural event will emphasize the importance of writing, education, and communication and is open to students, faculty, and staff. It will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the NOVA Annandale Campus, Ernst Center, CE Forum.

An upcoming NOVA Alexandria exhibition shows the big impact of small-scale art.

In celebration of the art and impact of the postage stamp, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invited United States Postal Service art director, Antonio Alcalá, to create an exhibition about stamp design for the new gallery on their Alexandria Campus.

NOVA becomes first public institution in Virginia to launch varsity esports program

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is establishing a competitive esports program affiliated with the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). NOVA joins over 80 colleges and universities in the United States, and is the first public institution in Virginia to recognize esports at the varsity level.


NOVA and George Mason University offer students affordable pathway toward four-year degree

In an effort to stream-line and guarantee the acceptance of transferrable college credits and to reduce higher education expenses, Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University have partnered to assist students seamlessly transfer from NOVA to complete a four-year degree through an innovative and collaborative program named ADVANCE.


Two NOVA students receive prestigious military scholarship

Dustin Perry and Justin Cuomo, two service personnel students at Northern Virginia Community College each received a $1,000 scholarship at the 12th annual Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education (VA-ACME) Symposium in Norfolk.

Governors of Virginia and Maryland to host conference on school crisis prevention and recovery at NOVA Community College

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland have announced a unique training event for school and campus personnel, law enforcement and other first responders. The Briefings: Resiliency and Recovery After a School Crisis, will be held on April 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Art Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus.

NOVA Community College alum awarded $40,000 transfer scholarship

Francesca Raoelison, a graduate of Northern Virginia Community College is one of 47 recipients of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. This highly competitive national scholarship will provide Raoelison with up to $40,000 annually for a maximum of three years to complete her bachelor’s degree.


NOVA-Annandale to host annual Green Festival, April 26th

To commemorate Earth Day and inform students and the local community about environmental concerns, the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College will host the 2018 Green Festival, on April 26th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Richard J. Ernst Community Cultural Center (CE) Building, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale.

NOVA students receive financial assistance to continue studies through Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation grant

The philanthropic support from the local business community continues to be a proven necessity for student success at Northern Virginia Community College. The Northwest Federal Credit Union (NWFCU) Foundation, the charitable arm of Northwest Federal Credit Union, recently partnered with the College to donate a $10,000 Higher Education Award grant to NOVA-Loudoun Lifeline - an emergency relief fund for students at the Loudoun Campus.


Dr. Nicole Reaves appointed as NOVA’s Medical Education Campus provost

Northern Virginia Community College’s President Dr. Scott Ralls is pleased to announce Dr. Nicole Reaves as the next provost of the college’s Medical Education Campus. Currently, vice president for academic and student affairs at City Colleges of Chicago—Wilbur Wright College in Chicago, Ill., Reaves starts at NOVA in March.

The strategic importance of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) to the region’s business community has once again been officially recognized. Dr. Scott Ralls, president of NOVA, has been included as being one of the most influential business leaders in the Metropolitan Washington region by the Washington Business Journal’s annual Power 100 list.

NOVA to host 9th annual MLK Day of Service

In an effort to assist the underserved communities, more than 300 Northern Virginia Community College students, faculty, staff and surrounding community members will work together during the MLK National Day of Service. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at NOVA’s Alexandria Campus Center for Design, Media and the Arts, 3301 Netherton Dr., Alexandria.
