“Viable Patterns” featuring paintings by Sondra N. Arkin will be on display from Sept. 26 to Oct. 28 in the Waddell Art Gallery at the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College, 21200 Campus Drive in Sterling. The exhibit showcases visual patterns created by the Washington, D.C., based artist.
Arkin will present medium-sized work from her 2011”Permutations Toward Infinity” series. Each image will offer a virtually infinite potential of visual patterns. Hot wax, shellac and inks are interleaved to make very thin paintings on industrial surfaces. The wax layers are interlaced with tinted shellac and/or ink layers to amplify the depth, color and texture of Arkin’s work.
“I work from what I have seen translated into form, often from the urban or natural landscape that I observe,” Arkin said. “The ethereal qualities of the materials I choose focuses my work on what is all around us. It strikes the viewer as organically familiar, but not entirely corporeal. Essentially my work is spatial, about seeing what cannot be seen, finding your place within the world around us. It is about looking so closely that you lose sight of visual reference points.”
For the past fifteen years, Arkin has participated in several solo and group shows in many private, corporate and public collections, including the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies Program, the District of Columbia Art Bank and public art in Crystal City. She has twice been the recipient of the Individual Artist Fellowship grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
The Waddell Gallery is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parking is free in the student parking lots after 4 p.m. For additional information, contact Gallery Coordinator Don Depuydt at 703-450-2627 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
