Free patriotic jazz dance performance July 2

Dancin’ Unlimited Jazz Dance Company will present a free performance on Saturday, July 2 at the Mary Louise Jackson Amphitheater at Northern Virginia Community College, 6901 Sudley Road, Manassas. The venue will open at 7 p.m. and the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., with free parking next to the amphitheater. In case of inclement weather, the show will be rescheduled for July 3.

“Jazz Dance Americana: Stars, Stripes and Stagelights” will feature concert jazz dance pieces and a patriotic medley for the holiday weekend. The show not only celebrates our nation’s independence but also commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s First Battle of Bull Run.

The show will include “An American Salute” with such patriotic musical favorites as “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Living in America” choreographed in the jazz dance style; “Drum” with percussive, tribal rhythms combined with African dance influences to create a high intensity, powerful performance full of jumps, leaps and turns; and “Into the Night” with a slow tempo and strong lines to draw the audience into its rich form and expression.

Jazz dance is America’s indigenous dance art form and a blend of African and European dance traditions. It made its way from the streets of New Orleans through vaudeville, to Broadway and the concert stage.

Dancin’ Unlimited generates the power and passion of the live jazz dance experience. “Just like when you attend a jazz music concert, you’ll find yourself becoming part of the show,” according to artistic director and founder Marilyn York.

Founded in 1973, Dancin’ Unlimited is a nonprofit, professional jazz dance company whose mission is to promote, produce and present jazz dance. Under the artistic direction of York, the company creates new and exciting programs each year with an emphasis on variety and technical excellence. The dancers are accomplished performers with extensive classical dance training and performance experience.

The group’s repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary, the Big Band era and Broadway jazz dance. With an eclectic program, the company performs in many venues for corporate events, conventions, trade shows, fairs, festivals, schools and special events. For the past 25 years, Dancin’ Unlimited has produced and performed in the annual Jazz and Tap Dance Festival as part of a commitment to bring the art of jazz dance to the community.

The performance is part of the Summer Evenings Under the Stars series, made possible with funding from the NVCC Educational Foundation. Series sponsors include Country Chevrolet and NOVEC. For more information call Amanda Corrigan at 703-530-8298.
