Veterinary Technology Program Receives Full Reaccreditation Status

Assistant Dean Tregel Cockburn and Distant Learning Chair Mary Aller, both of NOVA’s Veterinary Technology Program, are pleased to announce that full reaccreditation status has been granted by the governing body of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA). This status is for six years. Both full-time and part-time programs completed an intensive self-study and evaluation process by a five-member team of the AVMA two months ago.

The on-campus program was established during the early years of the Loudoun Campus in the mid 1970s. The program was first granted full accreditation by the AVMA in the fall of 1980 and has continuously maintained that status. In the fall of 2002, the program began offering a part-time distant learning option to meet the growing needs of working students already in clinical veterinary practices throughout Virginia. The online program achieved its initial accreditation in early 2004 followed by full accreditation in 2005.

The CVTEA credited both programs with efficiently sharing staff, faculty, budgets and other resources to meet the Standards of Accreditations. Several particular strengths identified in their evaluation were the well-maintained facilities, the supportive administration, the experienced, student-oriented, motivated program personnel, and the actively engaged Veterinary Advisory Committee. Additionally noted was the program’s excellent retention of highly motivated and enthusiastic students with demonstrated strong support from the veterinary community.

We congratulate everyone associated with the Veterinary Technology Program at NOVA on this acknowledged success of producing educated graduates for the growing workforce and field.
