NOVA-Loudoun Vet Tech Club wins national honor

The Vet Tech Club at the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College was recently named NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America) Student Chapter of the Year. Vet Tech Club members are students in the Veterinary Technology Program.

The student chapter had to be instrumental in promoting veterinary technology, involved in community service and demonstrate good leadership to be considered for the award. The winning chapter is given complimentary membership to NAVTA for one year, is featured in “The NAVTA Journal” and receives a plaque.

NOVA’s Vet Tech Club is very active in the community. In April 2009, the club hosted a rabies and microchipping clinic that raised $500 for the Loudoun County Animal Shelter. In December 2009, the chapter held a Pet Pantry Food Drive to collect donations of cat food, dog food and safe pet toys.

The students regularly volunteer their time to perform large animal work with such local organizations as the Popular Springs Farm Animal Sanctuary in Poolesville, Md., and the Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Va. They also volunteer at the Equine Rescue League, the Loudoun County Animal Shelter and various nature centers in Northern Virginia, and provide foster care for animals in need. In addition, club members organize events to educate the community about vet techs and raise funds for various projects that assist animals.

NOVA’s Veterinary Technology Program covers both practical and theoretical course work to prepare students for employment in animal health care at veterinary hospitals and in research and diagnostic laboratories. To learn more, contact Program Head Leslie Sinn at lsinn@nvcc.edu.
