NOVA's Career Training Open House Events Deliver Hope to Area Job Seekers

On September 7 at the Manassas Campus and again on September 8 at the Annandale Campus, NOVA held its first-ever “Career Training Open House” events to assist jobseekers in identifying training opportunities for new careers. Coordinated by a team of staff from all six NOVA Workforce Development/Continuing Education offices, the event promoted a comprehensive array of 50+ job training options in many career fields. Attendees could learn about these opportunities from program representatives for noncredit training, college credit programs and community partners such as Northern Virginia Family Service Training Futures and SkillSource.

With strong support from NOVA’s Marketing and Communications Department, NOVA succeeded in reaching 280,000 households with ads, articles and postcard mailings about the events, strengthening NOVA’s community reputation as the place to go for job training. Each event was attended by nearly 100 participants. As the accompanying photos show, Congressman Gerry Connolly attended the Annandale event, and delivered an upbeat message describing the many career opportunities available in our region. According to the evaluation survey of attendees, the typical attendee at the events was an unemployed mid-career female who is interested in careers in health care, business or information technology.

In his congratulatory note to the three dozen NOVA staff members who contributed to these events, Vice President for Workforce Development William Gary observed that “events such as these are important to the College, and without the demonstrated collaboration I witnessed between staff, faculty and administrative personnel, our success would not have been achieved.”
