Northern Virginia Community College has been awarded a $492,458 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop a new workforce training program. NOVA's Loudoun Campus will use the grant for the Geospatial Career Pipeline Initiative, an education, workforce development and business partnership designed to prepare America's 21st century geospatial technology workforce.

Geospatial technology uses geographic information systems, global positioning systems, high-resolution imagery and related technologies to manage and understand natural resources. The industry has grown rapidly, creating demand for workers with advanced qualifications.

NOVA will increase the number of people entering the industry by expanding training and education opportunities that certify work-based competencies. NOVA plans to target 105 people over a three-year period for education, training, workplace skills development and progress toward national certification. NOVA will also develop faculty and courses for Virginia high schools, and create a framework for training that can be adapted by other educational institutions.

The award is part of $10 million in grants from the Labor Department’s Employment and Training Administration’s Technology-Based Learning Initiative. To learn more, contact Michael Krimmer at mkrimmer@nvcc.edu.
