Two hundred preschoolers to receive free dental services
The Medical Education Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) will open its doors to 200 preschool children for the 2012 Give Kids a Smile© event on Friday, Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. The annual program provides free dental services to children in underserved populations.
The children, referred by the Northern Virginia Dental Society, will be seen by local volunteer dentists, hygienists and dental assistants for evaluations, cleanings and sealants. Children with advanced tooth decay will receive on-the-spot treatment to fill or extract teeth (with parental consent).

Give Kids a Smile© events, which take place nationwide, are sponsored by the American Dental Society. In 2011, nearly 1,300 children received dental care from more than 1,100 dental volunteers nationwide. Since the program began in 2002, 10,630 patients have received care from dentists, hygienists and dental assistants with a value of $4,642,537 in services rendered.
According to Give Kids a Smile, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in 53 percent of all 6 to 8 year olds and is dramatically on the rise for children up to the age of 5. Over 40 percent of all Americans fail to see a dentist every year and this number climbs to 70 percent within underserved populations.
