In an effort to end local domestic violence against women, the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College’s Sexual Assault Peer Education Program has partnered with the City of Alexandria and local dentist Dr. John Kling to officially proclaim March 4-10 as “NO MORE” Domestic Violence or Sexual Assault Week for the City of Alexandria. Mayor of the City of Alexandria Allison Silberberg will sign the NO MORE proclamation. The signing event will take place from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 in Room AA-289 (Provost Conference Room) of the Bisdorf Building on the Alexandria Campus, 5000 Dawes Avenue, Alexandria.
NO MORE Week, is a national week of grassroots activism that attempts to unite efforts in increasing awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence by merging the outreach of organizations, companies, community leaders and individuals from around the world. As a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Kling has provided pro bono dental services to help victims of domestic abuse restore their smile. Through the AACD Charitable Foundation’s Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program, volunteer dentists like Kling donate their time and skills to restoring survivors’ self-esteem, physical and emotional health.
During the event, NOVA-Alexandria Provost Annette Haggray will provide opening remarks, followed by the signing of the proclamation by Mayor Silberberg. A domestic abuse film documentary will also be shown to raise awareness along with a Q & A session led by NOVA-Alexandria Sexual Assault Peer Education Program advocates. Survivors of domestic violence will also share their personal stories and ways in which the public can stay informed.
The media is welcome to attend and cover the event.
