About 70 distinguished students received SEAL Awards and more than 20 were honored for other prestigious state and national awards.
The NOVA SEAL Awards honor the many talents and contributions of the College’s diverse community of scholars. Students are recognized who best exemplify the qualities of service, engagement, academics, and leadership. This includes community service involvement, campus club or organizational participation, outstanding academic achievement, and campus or community leadership.
Seventeen NOVA students, selected from over 1,500 applicants nationwide, were recognized as Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship semi-finalists. Twelve PTK All-Virginia Academic Team recipients were honored as well.
“This is a highlight of the academic year at NOVA,” said Dr. Frances Villagran-Glover, vice president of student services. “These individuals exemplify the best of over 72,000 NOVA students. They have demonstrated excellence in academics and service on campus and in the community.”
The students will be transferring to Ivy League institutions, the University of Virginia, College of William & Mary, University of Southern California, George Mason University and numerous other colleges nationally and internationally. Several others will serve in the United States military following NOVA and others are aspiring entrepreneurs that have already started businesses.
NOVA Associate Professor Jill Mitchell was the featured speaker for the evening. Mitchell was recently selected as the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Only one Virginia Community College System faculty member receives the award annually. In addition, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia selected her for the 2019 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award.
The event, held at the Hilton in Springfield, is a collegewide celebration featuring students from all six NOVA campuses and NOVA Online.
