Frequently Asked Questions

  • Students sitting in class

Q: What is the Writing Center?
A: The Writing Center is a place where students can receive helpful guidance and feedback. We do not edit papers or come up with ideas for you, but we will point out major flaws and give advice to help correct those flaws. Here are some tips for a productive Writing Center session.

Q: How long is my appointment?
A: All appointments are thirty minutes.  Please plan to work on one essay per session.

Q: Will the Writing Center guarantee a good grade?
A: The Writing Center will neither predict nor promise a specific grade. We are here to help you become a better college writer.

Q: Can I drop off my paper with a consultant or email my paper?
A: All tutoring sessions must be in person. As a reminder, we are not an editing service. All work must be completed by the student and all work is constructed out of the student’s own ideas. Also please review our Appointment Rules.

Q: Must I always make an appointment to utilize the Writing Center?
A: We urge everyone to make an appointment ahead of time because this will guarantee to you a 30-minute session. We do assist walk-in students, but please be advised that during busy periods of the year, we normally do not have space for walk-ins. We only accept walk-ins when there is a consultant available. If all consultants are busy, the walk-in must wait until one is available. Also, all appointments must be made either in-person, or by phone by calling us at 703.450.2511. We do not make appointments by email. If you need to cancel your appointment, please call us as soon as possible.

Q: Is there a fee to use the Writing Center?
A: The Writing Center is a free service provided by the college.

Q: Can I print at the Writing Center?
A: You can print at the Writing Center for 15 cents per page. Please bring exact change.

Q: Is the Writing Center open on weekends?
A: Many of our consultants are students at NOVA or George Mason University. We happily give our consultants the weekends off so they can focus on their own studies.
