[ NVCC Home Page | Catalog Search | Table of Contents | Instructional Programs | Divisions | Previous Page | Next Page ] Purpose: The curriculum is designed to provide training in the management of systems to collect, store, process, retrieve, analyze, disseminate, and communicate information related to the research, planning, provision, and evaluation of health care services. It provides students with a unique blend of courses in information technology, business management, and clinical knowledge. Students who possess an interest in studying diseases and therapies but who prefer not to work in a direct patient care setting find this career very rewarding. An interest in using computers to manage data is also important. Transfer Information: NVCC has a formal articulation agreement for transfer to the B.S. in Health Sciences-Health Care Management at Old Dominion University TELETECHNET. Students must comply with all General Admissions Requirements for Annandale Campus Health Technology Programs. (See page 99.) Additional Admission Requirements: Entrance requirements include a high school diploma with one unit each of high school level Algebra and Science (preferably Biology), and achievement of a score of 81 or better on the reading section of the English placement test, a score of 85 or better on the writing section of the English placement test, and a satisfactory score on the Mathematics for Allied Health placement test. Evidence of good physical and mental health must be demonstrated by submission of a physical exam form. CPR-A certification is required at time of clinical experience. Special Accreditation Status: The Health Information Technology program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), in association with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certification Eligibility: Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national certifying examination. The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Certification is recognized nationwide as proof of proficiency in Health Information Technology.
Total credits for the A.A.S. Degree in Health Information Technology = 70. These HIT AAS course requirements were approved April 2001 and supersede the listings in the printed 2001-02 College Catalog. To graduate from a degree program, students entering NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency skills as described in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs of this catalog. 1 The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 220, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course. 2 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
