Purpose: The General Studies A.S. degree is a flexible associate degree. For students who wish to transfer, the degree can parallel the first two years of a four-year B.S. degree program if they choose courses that match the transfer institution's requirements. For those students who do not plan to transfer, the degree allows them to structure a program to suit their needs using accumulated credits from a variety of formal and experiential sources.
Transfer Information: Students are advised to work closely with the faculty and counseling staff for program and course scheduling. Electives should be chosen carefully to meet requirements of transfer institution. The responsibility for proper course selection rests with the student.
*Graduation requirements are certified by the student's home campus.

Total credits for the A.S. Degree in General Studies = 60.
To graduate from a degree program, students entering NVCC Fall 1999 or later must demonstrate computer competency skills as described in the Degree Requirements section of the Instructional Programs of this catalog.
1 This requirement may also be met by substituting a course which utilizes the computer in a specific discipline.
2 The natural science elective may be selected from biology, chemistry, geology, natural science, or physics with a lab component.
3 The PED requirement may be met by one of the following options: PED 116, 2 cr.; PED 116, 1 cr. plus a PED activities course, 1 cr.; or PED 116, 1 cr. plus RPK 205, 208, 216, or 225. PED 116 is offered as both a 1-credit and a 2-credit course.
4 The Humanities/Fine Arts elective may be selected from art (ART), humanities (HUM), music (MUS), philosophy (PHI), religion (REL), sign communication (SCM), speech and drama (SPD), foreign languages, or 200-level literature (ENG) courses. Elective should be selected with advice of a counselor or faculty advisor to meet requirements of transfer institution. Some transfer institutions require six credits of sophomore literature.
5 The social science elective may be selected from the following: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology (includes anthropology).
