Tutoring is a 50-minute session where a student can work solely with a tutor on any academic difficulties they may be having. The aim is to provide students with a contact for support and to help them advance through their academic studies.

*Many of our tutors are polyglots and as such speak languages such as Korean, Russian, Farsi, Urdu and Pasto, among others. If you are interested in practicing a language like the ones mentioned, please contact the language center for more information.
Walk-in tutoring is available for students with quick questions. You do not need to make an appointment, simply arrive at the center when walk-in tutoring is being offered and you can meet with a tutor if one is free. Walk-in tutoring sessions are not the same as appointment-based tutoring sessions and typically don't require more than 20 minutes.
Tutors are typically very busy during peak hours and during midterms and finals. It can be difficult for walk-in students to be seen during these times of the day/semester. Please plan ahead!

To cancel your appointment for any reason, please call 703.323.3438 or stop by the Language Center at least three hours in advance (24 hours is ideal) of your appointed time. If no one is available, leave a message so that your call time can be noted. If you do not show up for an appointment without calling beforehand, you will not be able to make another appointment until the following semester.
What can I see a tutor about?
We are able to cover a wide-range of topics during a tutorial. Grammar is one area many students need a little extra help with and is often the focus of many tutorials. However, that is not all we offer. For students wishing to practice speaking, conversation tutorials are also available and reading and vocabulary exercises.
What the Center will not do?
Tutors will not proof read papers or do your homework for you.
What do we expect of you?
We ask that all students arrive on time for their appointments. Each student may have one 50-minute appointment each week for free. Please be aware that if you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, your tutor may be reassigned to help another student. We usually have more students that need appointments than tutors available, so please try to keep your appointments and be on time. If you are late to an appointment more than once or do not follow the cancellation policy listed below, you will not be eligible for tutoring again that semester.
What should I bring with me?
Please come prepared with an idea of which area you wish to cover and any work materials you know you will need. We have some materials at the Center, but we may not have the specific book(s) your teacher uses, so please try to bring your book(s) with you.
