Accommodations and Accessibility Services collaborates with students with documented disabilities and faculty to provide reasonable accommodations, auxiliary aids and services that are determined on a case-by-case basis through an interactive process between an Accommodations and Accessibility Services Counselor and the student who is making the request.

In considering your request for accommodations, Accommodations and Accessibility Services may request disability documentation from a licensed or certified professional. Such documentation may be used to establish the existence of a disability; describe the fundamental limitations and their impact on your ability to participate in NOVA's educational programs and services; and recommend accommodations.  An accommodation will not be considered reasonable if it creates a functional alteration to a program or service, even if it is recommended by a testing or treating practitioner.

Accommodations and Accessibility Services may consider any information, including but not limited to, your description of your needs; records of past accommodations and services from high school (eligibility testing, IEPs or 504 Plans), another college, state or high-stakes testing organizations; formal psychological or medical evaluations; and letters from past health, education or other service providers. Documentation must be relevant to the accommodation(s) being requested.

Upon completion of your Accommodations and Accessibility Services application, you will be prompted to upload any available documentation you can readily share. Please do not delay applying for services out of concern about not having the appropriate paperwork. A Counselor will respond within 14 days of your application to discuss the next steps in the process. Please check your email every day. If you do not hear from a counselor, check your spam folder and make sure you have entered your email correctly in the application.

All documentation submitted to Accommodations and Accessibility Services is kept strictly confidential.

Documentation should include:

  • the name, address, title and professional credentials of the person completing the evaluation (ex. licensed psychologist, medical doctor) and the area of specialization;
  • test, methods and/or criteria used, and when available, both the summary and specific test scores;
  • the nature of functional limitations; and
  • the current impact of the impairment on your ability to participate in NOVA's educational programs and services;
  • and recommendation(s) of accommodations
