MASTER Math Lab

What is MASTER Math?

MASTER Math is Northern Virginia Community College’s developmental math program. It consists of ten units, taking students from Whole Number Operations through Functions, Quadratic Equations, and Parabolas. Students get personalized assistance when they need it and computer based instruction when they do not. They spend an equal amount of time each week in the classroom and in the Master Math Lab.

Online Learning

The Math Lab is serving students online only through the summer 2021 term. We’re working via Zoom.

To get to our Zoom meeting, email us and we’ll reply with a link, or submit our tutoring request form. Our plan is to use one meeting link through the whole summer term; once you have that link you can just come with no need to email or make an appointment first.

Tutoring Sessions

We tutor students in both developmental math and credit-level math. Students enrolled in math at NOVA are welcome to come for online tutoring whenever we are open. You do not need an appointment. Just come.

Math Lab staff check requests frequently throughout our hours of operation and should get back to you quickly with a link and password for our Zoom meeting. We need to limit each session to about 20 minutes so that we are available to all students who need our services.

Special Instructions for MTT students working remotely:

  • You can get module notes through the MyLabsPlus (MLP) website. Once you’re signed in, go to the Main Menu and then to Document Sharing. Click on the unit for which you need notes. Scroll down. Near the bottom of the page you will see a list of notes and the PDF files for the PowerPoint for that unit.
  • Below the list of units are the words "multiplication table / formula sheet." Click on that link and scroll down to find links to the multiplication table and formula sheet. To get those without logging in to MLP, click here for the multiplication table and here for the formula sheet.
  • If you need to get started on a unit before your instructor has cleared you, you can still get access to instructional materials. To get to them:
    1. Make sure you have the module notes.
    2. From the left-hand sidebar on the MLP site click on "Multimedia Library." You will get to a page that is organized by chapter and section.
    3. The chapter and section for the module you’re working on are stated at the top of the first notes page for that module. Enter the chapter and section numbers for your module.
    4. Select your media type. If you know what you like, choose your preference. If not, why not try a variety of media and see what works best for you.
    5. Hit Find Now.

The system should give you a list of learning materials from which you may choose.

Note: MLP requires you to do a learning activity (PowerPoint or video or textbook) before you can start the online homework. If you have used only the Multimedia Library to prepare to do the homework, MLP will not recognize that you have done a learning activity. To remedy this, once your instructor has opened the unit for you, click on the PowerPoint or the video for the module you’re working on. Once you’ve opened it, MLP will allow you to access the homework.

Study Resources

Check out our blog, where you will find resources useful for NOVA math courses including MTT, Quantitative Reasoning, and Precalculus. We also post announcements (mostly about our hours) as well as posts about interesting math topics. It is, after all, a blog, so you are welcome to comment. Our blog also contains a page linking to our tutoring request form.
