Math 173 – Calculus With Analytic Geometry

Course Goal

Define a function, the limit of a function at a point, continuity at a point and differentiability at a point.


Homework Preparation for Class (due by class time):

Before in person class read Sections 1.5 and 1.6.

Tuesday: Classroom

  • Lecture on “limits and continuity”
  • Discussion

Homework: Review

  • After the lecture, review lecture notes.
  • For extra understanding, practice with the COW interactive tutorial.
    • Complete textbook problems:
      Section 1.5 (p. 91): 1-8, 9-67 Odd
      Section 1.6 (p. 102): 1-10, 11-21 Odd, 25, 27, 45, 46, 53, 54, 56
    • Complete the weekly Blackboard Quiz by Sunday, October 22, 2010 at 11:00 p.m.
  • Homework: Preparation for Online Class

Thursday: Online Class

Discussion Topic: Limits and Continuity of the three methods for evaluating limits, with which method do you have the most difficulty? List at least one problem that you encountered while working with this method. Which of the three methods were you the most comfortable with and why?

  • Write and post your answer to the following question no later than Friday, October 20, 2010 at 11:00 p.m.
  • Read all your classmates' posts.
  • Respond to at least two of your classmates' posts offering insight wherever possible by Sunday, October 22, 2010 at 11:00 p.m.
