Student Success Story
Originally from California, Sean Pek, 30, moved to Northern Virginia for a fresh start. When he began considering colleges in the area, he ultimately chose NOVA because of the quality education, affordability, and its Guaranteed Admissions program.
“The decision was easy,” Pek said. “NOVA is one of the most reputable community colleges in the nation and since I was paying out-of-pocket, the cost value fit right in with my educational plans.”
Pek enrolled at the College in 2009 and learned about NOVA’s Guaranteed Admissions from a relative who had gone through the program. He began to research the transfer agreements and eventually settled on George Mason University.
“It was a win-win situation for me,” Pek continued. “I received my associate degree, transferred to a four-year university as a junior, and am now obtaining my bachelors within four years-- all while saving money.”
He credits his success to paying close attention to the transfer agreements and having open communication with the transfer counselors. “They made sure I was on the right track and answered all of my questions.”
Pek transferred to George Mason University and completed three semesters before transferring again to the University of Mary Washington--all of his credits transferred seamlessly throughout.
He is graduating this spring with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. His post-graduation plans are to obtain a master’s in business administration and eventually work for an accounting firm or become a comptroller for a government agency.
